HX: Chapter 6

Chapter 6

The anonymity of her apartment offered little solace. The relentless drone of Lagos traffic, usually a familiar lullaby, now grated on her nerves like the buzzing of a trapped insect. Shadows danced in every corner, whispering her name in the same menacing tone as the text message seared into her memory. It was time to act, or be consumed by this suffocating fear.

A frantic search unearthed a well-worn USB drive at the bottom of her father's old briefcase. It was a relic from another time, a time before... before whatever had befallen him. Her father, a man of principles and quiet ambition, had always been a mystery she’d longed to solve. Now, clutching this fragment of his past, fear gave way to a desperate flicker of hope.

Her meticulously organized computer seemed a mockery of the chaos within her. Trembling, she inserted the USB drive.  A single folder blinked on the screen, its name a punch to her gut: "HX - EYES ONLY."  Her father had stumbled onto something, something that might have cost him dearly.

Within the folder lay a seemingly innocuous text file. Yet, as she scrolled through lines of code and cryptic notes, a sinking realization washed over her. Her father wasn't just an accountant; he'd possessed a hidden skill, a weapon she might be able to wield against HX. And amidst the code, like a beacon in the darkness, was a name: Emeka.

Who was he? An accomplice?  Another victim? The thought of reaching out filled her with trepidation, yet it thrummed with the same desperate defiance that had fueled her confrontation with Asukwo. With a shaking hand, she typed a single message, a plea tinged with the promise of an impossible fight: "HX bleeds its people dry. Can you help me make them pay?"

The response was almost immediate, laced with a skepticism that mirrored her own.  "HX?  You've got guts, I'll give you that. But taking them down…that's a suicide mission."

She typed back, her fingers flying across the keyboard: "I have information. Proof. I just need someone who knows how to fight in their world."

A tense silence, then: "Meet me. Tomorrow. Midnight. Code word: Ledger."  She hesitated, then added  a detail only someone who knew her father would recognize: "And the answer is always 42."

The rendezvous point was a ramshackle internet cafe tucked away in a maze-like side street, its dim lighting casting an almost comforting anonymity. A figure hunched in a shadowy corner, fingers a blur on a grime-encrusted keyboard.

"Ledger?" Dede's voice was barely a whisper.

The figure turned, and a flicker of amusement danced in his eyes. "So, the quiet accountant wants to start a revolution?"  Young, with a bravado that barely masked insecurity, Emeka was exactly the opposite of what she'd expected.

"HX stole something from me," she countered, the thought of her father fueling her courage. "I want it back."

He leaned closer, intrigued. “Everyone pays the toll to those vipers sooner or later. What makes you different?”

"I know how they hide their money. I can map their empire." She watched as a mix of doubt and greed warred across his face. Then, she lowered her voice, "My father... he worked on this. They might have taken his life."

Emeka straightened. There was a glint in his eyes now, something beyond greed. Perhaps a flicker of empathy, or perhaps the thrill of a challenge. "Alright, accountant, show me what you've got."  He gestured to the computer. "Show me how deep this rabbit hole goes."
