HX: Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Chief Asukwo's office was less a workspace and more a shrine to the power he wielded.  Every polished surface, every impeccably arranged sculpture reflected a world of untouchable opulence, a stark contrast to the cramped cubicle she'd left behind.  Yet, beneath the sheen of wealth, Dede sensed a ruthless pragmatism, a chilling calculation that sent shivers down her spine.

"Miss Ogunsanwo," Asukwo's voice purred, "Your… discovery. It displays impressive dedication to detail."

The word "discovery" hung in the air like a serpent's hiss. He knew. Every keystroke she'd ever made on HX's servers was open to his scrutiny.  Dede met his gaze, summoning every ounce of courage to mask her rising fear.

"Thank you, Chief Asukwo. I take pride in my work."  A flicker of surprise, perhaps even a hint of respect, marred his perfect composure. She'd clearly underestimated him. This was not a man accustomed to anyone, especially not a mere accountant, challenging his authority. Yet, retreat was no longer an option.

"Perhaps your skills are wasted then."  His lips curved into a semblance of a smile. "Tell me, what would you value more? A comfortable salary, a generous bonus...or the truth?”

The bribe was laid bare – a temptation wrapped in a threat. Visions of a life free from financial worries danced before her eyes, only to shatter against the memory of Aunty Yemisi's weathered face and the countless victims of HX's insatiable greed.

"The truth, sir," she countered, her voice barely above a whisper, "It always has its value."

Asukwo's eyes hardened, the veneer of civility slipping. "Loyalty, Miss Ogunsanwo, is a commodity HX rewards handsomely. But those who trade in betrayal… well, let's just say the market is less forgiving."

It was not a threat but a promise. Whispers of the company's ruthlessness, the rumors of vanished dissenters, echoed in her mind. Suddenly, the shadows of his opulent office seemed to stretch on forever, promising only a chilling oblivion for those who dared to defy him.

Dede swallowed hard, her heart pounding against her ribs. "With respect, sir, sometimes the price of silence is far greater than any reward."

Leaving his office, she felt the weight of his gaze on her back. She wasn't simply navigating a corrupt corporation but a battlefield with unseen enemies and untold casualties. The walk home, usually a familiar, comforting routine, was now a gauntlet. Every rustle of leaves in the gathering twilight, every flicker of headlights held the potential for unseen danger.

As the city lights began to pierce the gloom, her phone buzzed. She fumbled for it, her hands shaking. An unknown number. A single, chilling message: "Silence is gold. Speak, and you're dead."

It was the confirmation of her deepest fears. She was no longer playing a game of cat and mouse with Asukwo; her defiance had marked her with a target. The world tilted on its axis,  a kaleidoscope of terror and grim determination swirling within her. This wasn't just about stolen money, about a single act of corruption. This was a fight for survival in a world where truth had a deadly price tag.
