HX: Chapter 4
Chapter 4
The air in HX Petroleum's headquarters seemed thick with arrogance, each polished surface reflecting Chief Asukwo's immaculate control. Inspector Hassan felt a familiar twist of cynicism rise in him – this was how power insulated itself, behind layers of wealth and intimidation. But beneath the veneer, beneath the coded jargon of financial reports, that nagging itch from the anonymous tip remained. Something was rotten here, and he hadn't survived this long by ignoring his instincts.
"An accountant, you say?" Asukwo's silken voice oozed condescension. "Perhaps one with a misplaced sense of self-importance, Inspector?"
"Or perhaps,” Hassan countered, “one with a conscience, something I suspect is in short supply within these walls."
Across the room, Sergeant Bamidele shifted uneasily. He was used to shaking down petty criminals, not playing word games with titans like Asukwo. The air crackled with unspoken threats, the veneer of civility wearing dangerously thin.
Their search of HX's financial records yielded a frustrating mix of meticulous order and suspicious gaps. Discrepancies danced on the edge of illegality, masked by a labyrinth of subsidiaries and offshore accounts. It was the work of experts, designed to deflect suspicion, to make the illicit vanish into a maze of numbers.
As they pored over the documents, a figure materialized at the boardroom doorway - Helen, a viper in a designer pencil skirt, her lips curved in a predatory smile. "Well, well, Inspector. Slumming it, are we? Or has our dear Dede caught your attention?"
Hassan's gaze narrowed. This was no coincidence. Helen was Asukwo's eyes and ears within the accounting department, a viper perfectly placed to sniff out dissent.
Dede's name hung between them, unspoken but accusatory. Helen's eyes glittered with a cruel curiosity. "Such a brilliant girl," she purred, "But even the smartest ones can make foolish mistakes."
Hassan played his cards close to his chest. "Mistakes that could have disastrous consequences, perhaps?"
Helen's nonchalant facade faltered, just for a second. It was enough. There was a connection, a tenuous thread to pull. Before he could press further, a commotion erupted at the far end of the building. Asukwo strode off, his focus diverted. Hassan seized the moment, exchanging a grim look with Bamidele. The game had taken an unexpected turn, and the stakes were rising far faster than anticipated.
Later, cruising through the rain-slicked streets, Hassan wrestled with a tangle of new threads. The missing pieces of data – were they a smoking gun or a phantom? Helen's thinly veiled threat – a warning or a bluff? And then, an image flashed in his mind: a flash of chrome, half-glimpsed during the chaos - the sleek black SUV, always present at the edges of Dede's world, now encroaching upon his own.
He pulled to the side of the road, the storm a fitting backdrop to his growing unease. Outside his rusted car, a billboard flickered, advertising a luxury no one in the surrounding neighborhood could ever afford. It was as if HX was taunting him, a reminder that even if they found the evidence, untangling the web woven by the powerful would be a battle far harder than any he'd ever fought before.
