HX: Chapter 10
Chapter 10
The weight of betrayal sat heavy in Dede's gut. The faded ledger, its entries meticulously documenting payments made and received, painted a picture of her uncle's complicity that defied everything she thought she knew. How could the man who doted on her childhood summers, who spoke with such reverence about her father, have been a silent partner in the very corruption her father had fought against?
Driven by a burning rage, she stormed into the kitchen where aunty Yinka sat, frail but defiant. The accusation spilled from Dede's lips, a torrent of hurt and anger. Aunty Yinka flinched, a flicker of fear in her eyes quickly replaced by a steely resolve.
"You don't understand," her aunt rasped, her voice cracking with emotion. "Those were different times. HX held all the cards. Your father… he was idealistic, reckless even. We needed to survive."
Dede's voice rose a notch. "Survive? By silencing his voice? By becoming part of the very system he despised?"
The kitchen became a battleground of words, each syllable laced with years of unspoken truths. Aunty Yinka’s unloaded a lifetime of resentment, painting a picture of a strained relationship between brothers, fueled by envy and competing dreams. Dede's father, the idealistic whistleblower, viewed his brother as weak, a slave to a comfortable life. Her uncle, in turn, saw his brother as a reckless dreamer, jeopardizing the entire family's security with his grand pronouncements.
The bitter argument left a hollow echo in its wake. Dede felt adrift, the foundation of her beliefs shaken to its core. Was her father the shining hero she had always believed him to be, or was there a more complex truth hidden beneath the surface?
Suddenly, a sharp rapping at the door shattered the tense silence. An unfamiliar voice, rough and impatient, demanded entry. Aunty Yinka’s face drained of color, fear creeping into her usually stoic eyes. Before Dede could react, the door splintered open, revealing two burly men with cold, calculating eyes.
"Dede Ogunsanwo?" one of them barked, his voice laced with a barely concealed sneer.
Dede felt a wave of terror wash over her. The news of her arrival must have reached Lagos faster than she'd anticipated. Had Inspector Hassan's presence in town tipped their hand? Or was there another, more sinister, explanation? As the men surged forward, a horrifying realization slammed into her – the man Hassan had encountered, the one who knew his true identity, might not have been an observer after all. He might have been the viper in the nest, the one who had led Asukwo's agents straight to her doorstep.
The illusion of safety was shattered. Cornered in the heart of her childhood refuge, Dede was about to face the full force of HX's vengeance.
